Rescue operations

23rd May 1939 
"USS Squalus" submarine was put into sea on 23rd May for testing. There were 56 sailors and 3 civilians inside the vessel. As it went underwater one of its valves failed near Schelles island. At this time it was at 240 feet. The diving unit saved 33 men after 13 hours of struggle. Rest of the men didn't make it.

15th July 1956
Italian ocean liner "S S Andrea Doria" was a luxury passenger ship. It collided with another passenger ship "S S Stockholm" near Nantucket island in north Atlantic. At the time it had 1134 passengers and 572 crew members. Collision occurred due to dense fog. Doria's 5 fuel tanks got burst and it turned 90 degrees upside down. Doria sank in around 11 hours but most of the people were rescued. 46 people died in this accident.


11th April 1970
Seventh manned Apollo mission was launched from Kennedy space center Florida on 11th April. 56 hours after launch oxygen cylinder got burst on "Apollo 13". Oxygen level was depleting in spacecraft. It was safely landed on 17th April in Pacific ocean.

13 October 1972
On this day airplane Fairchild FH-227 was going from Montevideo to Santiago. There were 45 people on this plane. Due to bad weather it crashed on a pass on Andes mountain range at 13800 feet. From there it slipped 2000 feet, due to which 11 people died. On 29th October 8 people died due to landslide. On 23rd December remaining 18 people were rescued.

29th August 2005
Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on 29th August 2005. Winds were blowing at the speed of 234 km/h and there was heavy rainfall. American coast guards with the help of 5000 soldiers saved 35000 people.

29th April 2010
On this day 3 Spanish mountaineers were stuck on world's highest peak Mt. Everest at the height of 22900 feet. At that time snowstorm was occurring. Swiss pilot Captain Daniel Ofdenblaten couldn't land the helicopter. He then with the help of a wire landed the mountaineers to 9000 feet altitude. For this Captain was awarded for his bravery.

15th January 2009
US airways flight 1549 was going from New York to Charlotte. A bird collided with the plane 3 minutes after takeoff at an altitude of 2818 feet. Pilots couldn't turn the plane back to New York as speed and altitude were not proper. So they turned the plane to Hudson river and landed it safely on the river. All the 155 passengers were safe.
